454 Large Hood

What is the largest engine that will fit in a 1998 Ford F150?

I currently have a 1998 ford f150 with a 4.6L v8 and a manual transmission. I only use it to get back and forth to work and have been looking for a rebuild project. Instead I plan on getting something else for work and rebuilding the truck. Im switching out everything and trying to figure out what the largest engine will fit under the hood. I used to have a 76 grand lemans when I was in high school and rebuilt a 454 for it but thinking that's going to be way too much. By the way this is a single cab truck. I was thinking about a 351 because I don't want so much engine it overshadows the truck itself. I plan on lowering it a little, chop the top, cap the bed and turn it into a retractable hard top. The only thing I need to find someone to work on for me is the interior because I want a custom built dash.

Realistically the 5.4L is going the biggest that will swap in without too much fuss. You can even get one of the Aussie 4 valve 5.4L's if you something unique under the hood. With that said, you don't mind spending the money, you can fit just about anything you want to. Going to an old school big block or small block will likely cost significantly more since you'll have to do much more fabrication, and you'll likely have to replace all the accessories (power steering pump, AC compressor, alternator, etc.) as well as the transmission (you'll be needing a beefed up AOD or C6) and many other assorted parts. Unless you're prepared to drop about $15k into the drivetrain, I'd stay with a modular engine.
