I live in New Jersey, and has an area of two forced heating system air. One on each floor. In the evening, on the lower level is set at 69 and the floor is 62 years (we are not well up there until bedtime). It seems almost the oven bottom works harder to compensate for the heated air rises to the floor colder. Is this way, an effective use of a zone two? Or is it cheaper to keep both at the same temperature? Thank you!
You will need to close a door or seal off all routes to climb to keep the heat down to go upstairs during the day. Otherwise, even if you defined in the floor 62, your furnace will continue to run because the heat will naturally rise. Leave the set up there at 62 but 15 minutes before sunset on the lower level set at 62, and open the door to the upstairs which will release heat the first floor to second floor. If possible, you should also replace your conventional thermostats with programmable thermostats and low should be automatically recessed for the night. You can program it to kick in the morning before getting up and you'll never even feel the heat had been refused you save about 10% of your heating bill if you follow this strategy.
